10-Year-Old Ark. Boy Leads Pride Parade--and Sparks National Debate
6/29/2010
The choice of 10-year-old Will Phillips to lead this year’s Pride parade in Fayetteville, Arkansas, may seem natural enough, given young Will’s headline-making principled stand for equal rights for all Americans. The young man has been honored on previous occasions for his commitment to civil rights, having also been the recipient of a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) media award for an appearance he made with his father on CNN.

Finding a Gay-Friendly Campus
4/20/2010
The scene was similar to one that plays out thousands of times a year in gyms and auditoriums around the country: a college fair. The folding tables, the school banners, the admissions officers with a student representative or two, and the brochures and tchotchkes laid out. The only thing that might have made this one appear out of the ordinary was the preponderance of handouts with rainbow designs, and the fact that the fair was being held at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in Greenwich Village. This college fair, and several like it around the country, was devoted to recruiting gay students.

Ricky Martin is Livin' La Vida Loca
4/7/2010
For everyone old enough to remember Ricky Martin in his prime, I’m sure last week’s announcement that he was gay did not entirely throw your world off balance. In fact, I am willing to bet that his announcement came as very little surprise to basically anyone old enough to remember his infectious “She Bang,” or “Livin’ La Vida Loca” hits of the 1990s. This does not mean, however, that he should not be commended for gathering the strength to tell the world that he is gay.

Last week, the New Jersey Senate failed to pass a bill that would legalize marriage equality. I recently joined the millions of Americans who were told that the love they have for their significant others was not valid nor did it have a place in our society. While New Jersey does allow same-sex couples to enter civil unions (which lack many rights and privileges that marriage offers), it is ultimately a shame that I am not granted “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in my state or country.

A Boy and His Flag
12/1/2009
Will Phillips isn't like other boys his age.
For one thing, he's smart. Scary smart. A student in the West Fork School District in Washington County, he skipped a grade this year, going directly from the third to the fifth. When his family goes for a drive, discussions are much more apt to be about Teddy Roosevelt and terraforming Mars than they are about Spongebob Squarepants and what's playing on Radio Disney.
It was during one of those drives that the discussion turned to the pledge of allegiance and what it means. Laura Phillips is Will's mother. “Yes, my son is 10,” she said. “But he's probably more aware of the meaning of the pledge than a lot of adults. He's not just doing it rote recitation. We raised him to be aware of what's right, what's wrong, and what's fair.”

PRIDE
1/16/2009
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) pride refers to a worldwide movement and philosophy asserting that individuals should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The word “pride” is purposely used to oppose the word “shame,” which has been used to oppress LGBTQ people throughout history. The current LGBTQ civil rights movement is often associated with the Stonewall riots. These occurred in June 1969, when a group of LGBTQ people participated in a riot, following a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. Sylvia Rivera, a transgender rights activist is credited by many as the first person to strike back at the police and spark the rebellion. Further protests continued for several nights following the raid. According to pridesource.com, the LGBTQ pride movement contains three main premises: people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity; diversity is a gift; all individuals have the right to express their sexual orientation and gender identity regardless of what others think. Symbols of LGBTQ pride include the rainbow flag, butterfly, the Greek lambda symbol and the pink and black triangles reclaimed from their past uses as symbols of oppression. .

Nutrition
1/16/2009
Americans are the most diet-obsessed people in the world, but also the least healthy of any developed nation by most health markers. In this environment of nutritional confusion and anxiety, it’s no wonder that knowing how and what to eat can feel like an added chore. Thankfully, a Ph.D. in nutrition isn’t required in order to develop a responsible plan to eat reasonably well on a regular basis. There are some general principles for balanced eating habits that aren’t too difficult to follow. For example:

National HIV Ban Lifted
1/16/2009
On July 17, 2008 the Unites States Congress took a significant and historical step to ending the ban on immigrants and international visitors who are HIV positive. The HIV travel ban disproportionately affected lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons as our communities continue to grapple with relatively higher rates of HIV infections. While there is a limited waiver to the HIV ban if an immigrant has an immediate family member who is a US citizen or legal permanent resident like a husband or wife, LGBT immigrants have a much harder time qualifying for this waiver, as our same-sex relationships are not recognized under immigration law.

Representation in the Virtual World
8/18/2009
Video game characters lack diversity across the board and the majority of characters continue to be depicted as white males, despite having a much broader spectrum of gamer demographics. Shouldn't there be more LGBT representation in these games and if so how exactly should these characters be delivered?

Cultural Differences
1/16/2009
“Ultimately, we seek acceptance, not mere tolerance. Tolerance contains an element of condescension, of hierarchy, while acceptance implies an acknowledgement of equal validity for differing ideas and lifestyles.” - Rakesh Ratti,
My mother reminds me that when I was younger, most of the time I sat at home watching her cook in the kitchen. Women in the Indian culture are raised to cook, clean and ultimately become the perfect housewife. Their place is in the kitchen. On the many occasions when my mother wore a sari, I sat on her bed watching her get dressed instead of watching my father put on his tie and jacket. I did not sit and play G. I. Joe or go out with the other boys in the neighborhood and play “Cops and Robbers.” Boys are expected to be the ideal representation of a masculine man. Athleticism is one thing they should take interest in, be it football, soccer or baseball, in order to fulfill the image of a “macho” man. Although this is also apparent in my host American culture, I find the emphasis on fitting this image is greater within the Indian culture.
